"Trauma is not in the event, but in the nervous system."
Peter A. Levine
Why SE®?
Somatic Experiencing® (SE®), developed by Peter A. Levine in the 1970s, is a body-oriented therapeutic approach that focuses on the physical imprints of trauma. Unlike traditional talk therapies, which focus primarily on mental and emotional aspects, SE® places the body at the centre of healing. This is particularly beneficial for people who experience physical symptoms such as chronic pain, anxiety, or dissociation as a result of trauma. SE® may be an ideal choice for those who have difficulty accessing their emotions or whose trauma is predominantly expressed through physical symptoms. The aim of the method is to release the energy trapped by the trauma and restore the nervous system's regulatory functions, enabling more comprehensive healing.
How does it work?
SE® is based on the principle that trauma is an unfinished biological response to a threat that remains stuck in the body and causes a disruption (dysregulation) of certain regulatory mechanisms of the nervous system. During an SE® session, clients focus on physical sensations and inner feelings to gradually process and release this energy. The process is safe and gentle, avoiding the direct recall of traumatic memories.
What is an SE® session like?
SE® sessions are usually one-on-one, where the client lies or sits in a comfortable position and pays attention to their bodily sensations. The practitioner uses gentle questions and guidance to help the client stay present with their experience without becoming overwhelmed.
Using special body-focused techniques, SE® targets the regulation of the nervous system, allowing for slow and safe processing of trauma.
The main benefits of SE®
SE® targets the physical manifestations of trauma, allowing for deeper and more comprehensive healing. This is especially beneficial for people who have not succeed with traditional talk therapies. By reorganizing the nervous system, SE® can provide lasting relief from trauma symptoms, while safe and gentle processing ensures that clients do not become retraumatized. This approach is unique in that it uses the body as the starting point for healing, making it an effective tool for resolving trauma.
